So, my life as I know it is over. I’ve been given a responsibility far exceeding my aptitude. 1) It involves counting. And since I spend all day every day alphabetizing, I know absolutely nothing about numbers. I know that when counting, one number usually follows another, except when it precedes. But then I’ll wonder, [...]

So, here it is, the cursed abomination that is the pinnacle of Hollywood indulgence and decadence and moral depravity. Not only has some asshole remade a definitive masterpiece of in the annals of film history, but he’s butchered it, cut up its face with a razorblade, forcibly sodomized it, and repackaged it as a musical. And if creatives can’t adapt, using new media and new technology and new ideas to their advantage, then the importance of the literary arts will suffer. That’s not to say the stories will change, that style, voice, content, or form will dramatically alter. What’s changing is the medium through which authors connect with their audience, or even how authors build an audience.

I’ve always thought of the last half of the 20th century as belonging to Mailer, Roth, and Updike—not only for their creative faculties, but for the temperament and quantity of their output. Mailer became obsessed with the behemoth novel, trolling the backwaters of conspiracy for the great American novel he finally admitted was beyond his [...]

I’m calm, cool, collected. I swear. No sense of panic written into the growing number of lines on my brow or patches of silver in my hair. These past three years have aged me beyond recognition. But, in spite of the horror show that is my life—the poverty, the loneliness, the panic attacks in my [...]

So, as my Mandarin Chinese is very limited, my understanding of this scene is like this:
The woman holding the palm-leaf fan is a witch who uses it for her own ends. Monkey quickly returns in the form of a bee after she blew him far away and re-transforms back into Monkey, requesting the fan on behalf [...]
