The Vague Terrain
Paperback Original
167 pages
At the center of the novella is Victor, a cunning and amoral conman who has manipulated his way into the graces of one of Queenston’s wealthiest and most notorious families. Already exiled to the lakefront communities of the rich, the Whitcliffe’s find themselves driven farther out, to the fringes of the fringe.
Vyvian is a recovering addict who has returned home to start over, only to learn his native city has left him behind. As he struggles to find his footing, his path intersects with those inhabiting the world around him.
Told almost exclusively through the characters’ own memories and dreams, The Vague Terrain becomes its own story, neither a collection of fiction nor a complete novel. By eliminating the context of back story, William LaPage has created an ethereal reality in broad strokes, where memory and its limitations affect our perception of time.
